Justice For Chevy

Chevy was a handsome young German Shepherd, rescued from a shelter and welcomed into our care at Screven County Spay & Neuter Corp. When we first met him, it was clear Chevy was a deeply intelligent, loyal, and sensitive soul. From day 1 Chevy showed no signs of trauma, aggression or behavioral issues. He was a happy, friendly dog, completely oblivious to the fact that he was in rescue.
Chevy spent around 6 weeks in our care, and he was such a joy to have around.  He loved playing with his friends, playing with toys, and soaking up affection both from adults and children. We believed in Chevy. We believed he could thrive in the right environment, and we felt confident he would make a wonderful addition to a family!
Chevy was adopted. But instead of being supported through his transition and training, he was misunderstood. His adopter didn’t follow the decompression guidance we gave. They ignored red flags. They didn’t reach out to us for help and when Chevy struggled, they didn’t show him patience. They disregarded their contract and didn’t bring him back to us and in a horrible act of anger, in under 30 days in his new home, they took his life.

Chevy didn’t fail. Humans failed him.

Why We Share His Story

We don’t tell this story to shame or scare. We share it because it’s the reality of rescue. Some dogs need more than food and a bed. They need structure. They need training. They need time. And above all—they need commitment.

Every adoption is a promise.
To do the hard things.
To ask for help when needed.
To never give up when it gets uncomfortable or messy.
To return the dog if you can’t uphold that promise.

What You Can Do

- Follow the decompression plan.
- Stick to a routine.
- Work with a trainer if needed (we can help you find one).
- Be honest if you're struggling.
- Return the dog to rescue if you can’t continue. This is in the contract you signed and must be honored. We will ALWAYS take our dogs back- No questions asked.

There is no shame in asking for help. There is only tragedy in staying silent.
